Honeywell’s Apex® Integrated Cockpit Selected For New Extra EA-500 Single-Engine
Turboprop Aircraft
LAKELAND, Florida, April 13, 2004 -
Honeywell announced today that Extra Aircraft has selected Honeywell’s
APEX integrated cockpit as the standard avionics package in the new Extra EA-500
single-engine turboprop business aircraft, beginning in 2006.
"The EA-500 is designed to be efficient and
economical, while offering superior performance and safety. The APEX system is a
perfect match for Extra Aircraft’s high standards," said Dan Barks, Director of
Marketing, Honeywell Business, Regional and General Aviation.
"We designed APEX for this class of
aircraft, and it offers the ultimate in safety, quality, functionality,
operational simplicity and reliability."
The
standard APEX system on the EA-500 will feature digital communication and
navigation radios, a flight management system, a digital autopilot, two Active
Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays measuring 10.4-inches diagonal, mode S
transponder, Engine Indicating and Caution Alert System, Traffic Advisory System
(TAS), Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) and a dual-channel Air
Data Attitude Heading Reference System.
Options include an additional display, Traffic Alert and
Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) in place of TAS, weather radar, radio
altimeter, Distance Measuring Equipment, Automatic Direction Finder and
Honeywell’s Flight Information Services (FIS).
The EGPWS provides a map-type display of the surrounding terrain
and sounds an alert if the airplane approaches too close. TAS and TCAS provide a
map of surrounding aircraft and sound an audible alert if another aircraft comes
too close. FIS brings weather data into the airplane from a network of
Honeywell-owned ground stations in the United States.
The Extra EA-500 is a six-place, single-engine turboprop
aircraft with a range of 1,600 nautical miles and a 225-knot maximum
cruising speed.
The aircraft will be available from the
beginning of 2005 with Honeywell EFS 40 cathode ray tube displays and with APEX
beginning in 2006. Honeywell International is a $23 billion diversified
